2017 WASECA COUNTY FARMER FORUM

THE 2016 WASECA COUNTY FARMER FORUM

WASECA, Minn. – Over 100 attendees gathered on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 for the 6th annual Waseca County Free Farmer Forum meeting at Farmamerica.   People attending the session learned about the buffer initiative, nitrogen fertilizer management, building demolition and watershed restoration and protection. In addition, attendees were also provided an opportunity to meet and greet staff from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Waseca County, the Waseca Soil and Water Conservation District, the Greater Blue Earth River Basin Alliance and members of the Le Sueur River Watershed Network.

This year’s event will featured Tom Gile, the new Buffer and Soil Erosion Program Coordinator with BWSR. Gile discussed the newly passed Buffer Legislation, including where buffers will be required, the timeline for implementation, what entities will be involved in the process, and the effect buffers have on water quality. In addition, talks will focus on topics including geographic information systems tools and the watershed approach, targeting water storage to maintain productive land and restore clean water, guidance on building demolition procedures and Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan.

The event was sponsored by Waseca County, the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Those co-sponsoring the event included; Roundbank of Waseca and Waldorf, Janesville State Bank, First National Bank of Waseca, State Bank of New Richland and United Prairie Bank of Waseca. With the help of these sponsors, the forum was  offered to landowners in the County at no charge.
